Awards Sponsored by the Department of Chemistry

Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Major Award
This award is presented to a freshman chemistry major based upon their performance in the Principles of Chemistry sequence. To qualify a student must have passed Principles of Chemistry I lecture (1211) and Principles of Chemistry I Lab (1211L) with a grade of A during the Fall semester. They must also be enrolled in Principles of Chemistry II (1212) and Principles of Chemistry II Lab (1212L) during the Spring semester.

Excellence in Chemistry Research Award
Junior and Senior chemistry majors who have demonstrated an excellent talent in research and have a special promise as a researcher are eligible for this award. Requirements include a strong recommendation from their mentor concerning research conducted at CSU and enrollment in Supervised Undergraduate Research (CHEM 4899). Special consideration will be given to those students that have presented at a local, regional, or national meeting, or contributed to a peer-reviewed publication.

Outstanding Chemistry Major Award
Junior and Senior chemistry majors who have distinguished themselves in coursework, research, and service to the department and community are eligible for this award. Overall grade point average is a significant factor in the evaluation. However, special consideration will be given to students that have served the department as a tutor or teaching assistant; served as a volunteer at Science Olympiad, National Chemistry Week, Science Fairs, etc.; or served in a leadership role in a chemistry student organization (ACS, Literature Club, Gamma Sigma Epsilon).

Outstanding Chemistry Graduate Student Award
Graduate students enrolled in the Master of Science-Natural Sciences (Chemistry Track) that have distinguished themselves in both academics and research are eligible for this award. Special consideration will be given to students that have successfully defended their thesis.

ACS Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry
This award is given to the top graduating chemistry major who has demonstrated excellence in organic chemistry based on a combination of research experience, coursework, and a desire to pursue a career in chemistry. This award is given in collaboration with the American Chemical Society’s Division of Organic Chemistry.

ACS Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry
This award is given to the top graduating chemistry major who has demonstrated excellence in analytical chemistry based on a combination of research experience, coursework, and a desire to pursue a career in chemistry. This award is given in collaboration with the American Chemical Society’s Division of Analytical Chemistry.

ACS Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry
This award is given to the top graduating chemistry major who has demonstrated excellence in physical chemistry based on a combination of research experience, coursework, and a desire to pursue a career in chemistry. This award is given in collaboration with the American Chemical Society’s Division of Analytical Chemistry.

Royal Crown Cola International Prem Virmani Scholarship presented by Cott
This annual scholarship ($1,000 in each semester) is awarded to a deserving chemistry major. All students are encouraged to apply. A panel of chemistry faculty reviews the application packets and chooses a group of finalist. The winner is determined after a formal interview with representatives from Cott. The winner is recognized at a special ceremony.

AIC Student Award
This award is given to a top graduating undergraduate or graduate chemistry major. The award is given in recognition of a demonstrated record of leadership ability, character, scholastic achievement, and advancement potential in the chemical professions.

Awards Sponsored by the ACS Student Chapter

The Anil Banerjee Outstanding Chemistry Major Award
The officers of the ACS Student Chapter nominate and elect the winner of this annual award in honor of Dr. Anil Banerjee. The full description can be found on the chapter website. To be considered, a student must be a dues-paying member of the Columbus State University student chapter of the American Chemical Society. The winner must be a volunteer at a minimum of three events during the Academic year. These include Discovery Day, National Chemistry Week, high school visits, or other events beyond routine monthly meetings. Winner must have a minimum cumulative 3.00 G.P.A.

The Floyd R. Jackson Freshman Book Award
The officers of the ACS Student Chapter nominate and elect the winner of this annual financial award ($100) in honor of Dr. Floyd R. Jackson. The full description can be found on the chapter website. To be considered a student must be a dues-paying member of the Columbus State University student chapter of the American Chemical Society. The winner must be enrolled in Principles of Chemistry I (CHEM 1211) during the Fall semester and planning on taking Principles of Chemistry II (CHEM 1212) during the following Spring semester. Candidate’s participation in chapter events will be heavily considered during the selection process.

ACS@CSU Book Award
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors chemistry majors are invited to apply for this need-based financial award ($100). The officers of the ACS Student Chapter review applications and chose the annual award winner. To be considered a student must be a dues-paying member of the Columbus State University student chapter of the American Chemical Society. The applicant’s statement of need, major, and participation in chapter activities will be the primary factors in choosing a winner.

Awards Sponsored by Gamma Sigma Epsilon

The Roy W. Sonntag Award
This financial award ($100) is given to an outstanding member of Gamma Sigma Epsilon. The officers of Gamma Sig are responsible for nominating and selecting the annual winner. The candidate's participation in chapter, department, and community events, as well as their research and academic accomplishments, will be heavily weighted.

The DeLap-Holcomb Scholarship
This scholarship ($200) is awarded to a junior or senior chemistry major or minor who is also a member of Gamma Sig. The scholarship is merit-based and awarded annually. The winner is chosen by the chapter faculty advisor. Scholarship, research, service, and character will be deciding factors.
